Task 2:
Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

my answer:
It is always a headache for newly graduated students to organize their resume, trying to show their advantages for specific positions. It is widely argued that universities and colleges should provide more courses, like how to prepare interviews or how to manipulate the special popular machine in office, which are much closer to future career.

It is often admitted that such courses are significantly helpful for students. First of all, mastering the skills closely related to workplace could dramatically increase the chance of obtaining a dream job. The main reason is that it could save tremendous resources, such as money or time, for employers from training new staffs. Moreover, more students will be attracted to join those universities because of the fame among companies. This, in turn, could enhance the profits of the universities.

It will be unfair, however, to ignore the knowledge itself. It is often said that the basic knowledge is like the foundation of a building. In that case, despite the dullness and indirect relations with real work, such knowledge will affect the understanding of advanced topics, which, in most cases, involve the “practical” skills in future work. What is more, the major responsibility of an educational system, like colleges, should be training the ability of learning, rather than only teaching the “useful” knowledge. It is widely believed that in reality it is considerably hard to learn the actual knowledge in school in advance which could be directly used after graduation, due to the explosive speed of technological development.

I am convinced that some general knowledge related with future work, such as how to handle the interpersonal relationships among colleagues, should be included in the curriculum of universities. I am convinced that it could reduce the chance of having problems in future work, with no doubt. However, the ability of learning new knowledge is more important for a successful career in all aspects. After all, the up-to-date technology used in work is changing every year.

To sum up, a great university should not only offer students “yummy fish”, but also teach them “how to fish”, which is key factor for future success.
