Topic:Some people say that children should learn their second language as early as possible. Do you agree?
There isn’t a general consensus in the best time for a child to start to learn a second language. Different people have different ideas. Some people argue that the children should start to learn as soon as possible. I agree that they should embark on the second language at their early age, while it is not the earlier the better.
Mounting evidences and researches have proved that children’s language studying ability is the much better than the adults. They are just like a huge receptacle ready for absorbing all interesting and meaningful knowledge. Proficiently grasping a second language can add points for one’s future career; hence it is for one’s good to start to learn a second language at the early age. In my opinion, one could try to learn a second language from 6 or 7 years old.
However, it is too extreme to think that children should study the second language as soon as possible. In my opinion, children under the age of 6 are forging their native language system and their brain hasn’t been mature enough to study a second language simultaneously. If we force them to do so, they tend to mix different languages up and end up getting bored with study because they don’t get any positive feedback from the language learning. Moreover, if starting to learn a second language too early, much free time will be deprived and they will lose a lot of opportunities of playing with other children which is good for them to develop their social skills. So starting to learn a second language has some drawbacks, and parents should be aware of this.
To sum up, grasping a second language is definitely beneficial to the children and it is better for them to start to learn from their early age. In my opinion, they can start to learn it from 6 years old. At that time, they are ready to learn both physically and mentally.
