Many people believe that scientific research should be carried out and controlled by governments rather than private companies. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Scientific research has provided significant discoveries and innovations that have been of great benefit to ordinary people’s life in almost every aspect. Conducting scientific research inevitably requires huge amount of money as well as dedicated work of scientists and specialists. Thus, the question that who should lead the scientific research has always been a focal point of the public. Leading by the government or by private companies respectively has their own advantages as well as disadvantages.
For one thing, with its strong financial resources, government is able to provide sustainable investment in a scientific research that requires long term engagement of scientists. Private companies, in contrast, are most unlikely to support huge tasks due to the fact that they are profit driven and endless investment is not realistic for them. Further more, most of the private companies are reluctant to invest in those researches that can not promise instant market value, yet its result will benefit the welfare of human beings in long term. Thus, governments’ support in those fields is important to ensure progress in those fields.
Private companies, also play a very important role in scientific research. With a professional team in understanding and exploring consumers’ needs, private companies are able to cover varied fields to fulfill people’s diversified needs that have not yet caught the attention of governments. Further more; private companies are also famous for their ability of putting technology and research results into massive productions, so even common people can benefit from the results of scientific research.
In conclusion, scientific research conducted by governments and private companies are equally critical. By proper division of focused fields, they are able to fill each other’s blanks to better meet people’s needs.
