9. Some people say the popularity of English and tourism will harm the minorities and minor languages. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.
In the past decades, with the growth of modern communication and development air transportation, English and tourism are getting more and more popular. Some people believe that this trend will bring negative effects to the minorities and minor languages. Personally, I agree their view, but I would qualify it to some extent.
There are several reasons to believe that the popularity of English and tourism do harm to minorities and minor languages. For one thing, the widely use of English pose a threat to some lesser-known languages. This is because English, as an international language, is accepted by most pats of the world and is the first language of some developed countries. In order to conduct business or keep good relationship with other countries, people use more English than native language, which makes their native language endangered and eventually go extinct. For another, international tourism may cause conflicts between foreign tourists and local minorities. Because of cultural differences, some behaviors of foreign tourists may serve as disrespect of local residents, which makes local minorities angry and even leads to conflicts.
On the other hand, it is worth pointing out that there are also arguments supporting the opinion that the popularity of English and tourism are beneficial to minorities and minor languages. The main reason for this is that English and tourism promote the cultural communication, which makes more people learn about minority cultures and languages. Consequently, it promotes the development of minority cultures and languages.
To sum up, although the popularity of English and tourism bring us side effects, the advantages of it should never be ignored. What we may have to consider is how to accept this trend as positive while at the same time staying away from its drawbacks
