9 Many people believe that scientific research should be carried out and controlled by the governments rather than private companies. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
In the present age, it is generally accepted that science plays an increasing critical role in the development of the society. But when it comes to scientific research, some people believe it is government’s duty. So it should be carried out and controlled by the governments rather than private companies. Personally, I agree their view, but I would qualify it to some extent.
There are many reasons for people to believe that only the government has the capability of developing the latest science. For one thing, scientific researches always require a large amount of investment such as money, manpower and natural resources, which is impossible for private companies and individuals to afford. For another, safety is an important issue should be taken into account. For example, research on nuclear energy may bring destructive disaster to both human beings as well as natural environment. So it should be highly restricted and only the government has the rights to develop it.
However, it is worth pointing out that there are actually hundreds of thousands of private companies have also been engaged in scientific study already. The main reason for this it that some scientific researches can bring great immediate profits, which motivates private companies spare no effort to take part in it. Despite their research is driven by interests, we should not overlook the fact that privates companies also contribute to the development of science.
To conclude, after considering the arguments above, I believe that government should take the responsibility for scientific research and control. All in all, it would be sensible to suggest that government and private companies join up to make effort to the advance of science.
